Before I start, let me go ahead and state that you’re going to want to have a four-piece grinder when doing this.

It is better for you to have a finer mesh screen between the bottom two chambers as well, as that will prevent particles of bud from falling into the kief catcher and polluting it. I’ll also detail the process before I detail the “science” behind it. Lastly, this will render your bud much less potent. Remember, more kief means less trichomes on your bud and the more money you save!

To begin, you’re going to want to keep the bud you want to grind up in your freezer. I found that about five grams of kief-y weed yielded about half a gram of kief. When you grind up your bud, be sure to have at least a coin the size of a dime inside, and shake after each grind for about a minute. You’re also going to want to have another container to keep the ground bud in, unless your grinder has a massive chamber.

After every two or three full chambers of bud, you’re going to want to leave the grinder in the freezer for about five minutes. Take it out and give it a good slam on a hard surface to knock any stuck kief off of the screen. This prevents your screen from becoming clogged and helps with the kief collecting process.

We use the freezer for both the bud and the grinder for two separate reasons, actually. First, by placing the bud in the freezer, we allow the Trichomes to become solid and brittle. When you grind up partly frozen trichomes, they not only fall off easier, but they are lest likely to burst and create sticky bud (yet yield no kief). By adding the coin and shaking the grinder, the coin will knock off even more trichomes than just grinding because of the force of the impact. The reason for placing the grinder in the freezer is to cause the metal to contract (shrink). This not only creates space between the mesh screen, allowing stuck trichomes to fall through, but also prevents the kief from sticking to the inside of the grinder. A nice hard knock on a solid surface will dislodge any that hung on despite the cold.

Pro-Tip: Grinders aren’t all the same. Some are better at collecting kief than others. If you’re in the market, get my personal favorite, it’s both affordable & i’ve found to be amazing at capturing kief / pollen!
